The estuary of the Olt River, where it flows into the Danube, includes a part of the floodplain forests along the Danube and the floodplain forests in the lower course of the Olt River. The habitats in the area form a real mosaic, favorable for breeding, feeding and resting of the birds. The birds of interest include the black-crowned night heron (Nycticorax nycticorax), the grey-headed woodpecker (Picus canus), the middle spotted woodpecker (Dendrocopus medius), the common kingfisher (Alcedo atthis), or the pygmy cormorant (Phalacrocorax pygmeus). The site is also overlapping with the anthropic lakes of Frunzaru and Izbiceni, as well as with Ostrovu Mare. During the migration period, the site hosts more than 20,000 specimens.
