The Belogradchik Rocks Natural Landmark is a unique rock complex, located right next to the city of Belogradchik and is a popular tourist destination. Includes rocks of various form and size, rising more than 100 meters high.
Venets Protected Site is the newest show cave in Bulgaria, opened for visitors in 2015. The exceptionally beautiful colored calcareous formations and ice crystals resembling flowers, figures, and animals are interesting to see.
Both sites are located within the larger area of the Western Balkan Mountains and Fore-Balkan – a site protected under the Habitats Directive and the Birds Directive (listed separately below). However, due to their specificity and high tourism potential, they were identified as a separate site for the purpose of this study.
The Belogradchik Rocks are easily accessed, right from the center of the city of Belogradchik. The Venets Cave is accessed via Oreshets Railstation and the village of Oreshets.
In 2007, the Belogradchik rocks were among the candidates for the New Seven Wonders of the World contest and were ranked in one of the top positions, although they didn’t make it to the finals.
